Patient Forum

The CyberKnife Patient Forum is designed to provide a place for people who have been diagnosed with cancer, their family and friends, to exchange useful information and provide support to one another. The Forum may also help people find answers to questions they have about the CyberKnife treatment experience. Accuray strives to facilitate these exchanges and encourage discussions. Recently we have experienced some aggressive or inappropriate spam postings. We are diligently working to resolve this issue and thank you in advance for your patience.

How to get a referral? Must we have a referral?

My husband was just diagnosed with a lung tumor ---adenocarcinoma, 3.5 cm, in left upper lobe. No evidence of tumor anywhere else on CT scan or PET scan. He had a needle biopsy last week. Thoracic surgeon says he is not a candidate for surgery because his pulmonary function studies are terrible due to COPD. We have an appointment with a radiation oncologist but it isn't for another 2 weeks. We don't want to wait. We are a 2hr. drive from Nashville. The surgeon mentioned Cyberknife as a good possibility for treatment. Do we have to wait for the doctor here to make a referral or can this be a self-referral? You can tell that we do not want to wait. Everything happened so fast---let's get this test, come in for this scan, let's get the biopsy tomorrow----and now we have to sit and wait for 2 weeks to see the radiation oncologist here, knowing he has this tumor in his lung.

It can be a self-referral. Just call the nearest CK center. One word of caution - some insurance may require a referral, but the center usually does not.

But waiting two weeks won't hurt anything either. This thing has been there for a while

We have many self-referrals in our facility and have not had any problems with insurance related to that process as far as I know. I would not wait and arrange the appointment.

You cannot exclude waiting from the equation, its a difficult time taking process for the betterment. It will be a self referral, make sure you have insurance.
